THE GRAMMAR OF SAFETY SIGNS – TEACHER NOTES

Foundation Stage – Reception.
Age 4-5 year olds

Underlying Teaching Philosophy

Children at 4 years old love to explore, touch and feel. It is important at this stage to challenge a child's mind by combining exploration with creativity. The Foundation Stage of a child's life is critical and as such must be a fun form of learning.

At 4 or 5 years old children will trust the judgement of their parents, teachers and carers. However, this module of the grammar of safety signs has been designed to challenge a child's mind by combining exploration with creativity.

The module aims to be complementary to the 6 early learning goals:

  • Personal, Social and Emotional Development.
  • Communication, Language and Literacy.
  • Mathematical Development.
  • Knowledge and Understanding of the World.
  • Physical Development.
  • Creative Development.

In addition, the module also addresses issues surrounding 'Every Child Matters' in the form of assisting a child to have a sense of wellbeing and safety. A child should be able to recognize a dangerous situation and to deal with the situation through an understanding of safety signage.

The Foundation Module creates the bases and underpinning knowledge of the grammar of safety signs in order to allow further more complex modules to be taught throughout the key stage area education.

Each module can be used following the previous module, or as stand-alone modules.
